Robert Harris is out with his new book - The Ghost.
For those of you who have not read Robert Harris ( not to be confused with Thomas Harris of 'The Hannibal' fame), he writes historical fiction. 'The Fatherland', - alternative historical fiction where Hitler and the Nazi Germany won the second world war and 'Enigma' are his more famous novels. Enigma is one of the most brilliant books written in recent times. Set in the second world war the book revolves around a British mathematician trying to break the German Enigma code. Harris then wrote fiction based on the Roman history - Pompeii and Imperium;again very well written.
With The Ghost, Robert Harris moves away from historical fiction and cuts to the present times. A dark pulp fiction where the main character, a former British Prime Minister (Lang), heavily modelled on Tony Blair, is exiled and is in some sort of a hiding at the Martha's Vineyard. Here, Lang is working on his 'reveal it all' memoir and his ghost-writer is mysteriously found dead. Enter the new 'Ghost' and the fun begins.
The Ghost finds out more than he bargained for - the mis-adventures during the Iraqi war were not mistakes afterall and the former Premier is not what he potrayed himself to be.
Harris's previous books were certainly better written. But the satire and the humour in this book is really appreciable. The plot is at times chilling and at times untenable. Read this book more for the satire.
